What is IB? When parents talk about education and what it means, what they really want to know is not just the words, but how their children will learn better and eventually become leaders in a globalized world. Founded in 1968, the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) provides four International Baccalaureate education programs for children and young people around the world, namely the Primary Years Program (PYP), Middle Years Program (MYP) and University Preparatory Program (DP). Its purpose has never changed. By going beyond textbook teaching and classroom settings, they aim to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who can help create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is offered by global international schools across the country. So far, more than a thousand universities in nearly 100 countries around the world have maintained a stable contractual relationship with the International Baccalaureate Organization to recognize the IB diploma and ensure comprehensive and comprehensive education for children in foreign communities. It has to be said that although the IB curriculum is quite difficult for domestic children, the IB diploma has been well recognized in schools all over the world. Almost all universities in the UK accept the IB diploma, including world-class universities such as Cambridge and Oxford.

Thousands of universities in Western countries such as Canada and the United States consider the IB Diploma a quality entry qualification. Prestigious schools such as Yale, Harvard, and Princeton even allow IB students with excellent grades to skip directly to the second-year university courses. All universities and professional colleges in all states in Australia recognize the IB as an excellent entry qualification.

According to relevant data research, the university entrance rate of IB high school graduates in the United States is 92%, while the average university entrance rate of all high school graduates in the United States is only 69%. In China, 71% of IB high school graduates can enter the top 500 universities in the world, so the IB program is also rated as the best university preparatory high school program in the world.

The IB curriculum is more complete than the A-LEVEL system. It generally arranges for children to enter and complete three stages in secondary school. When the third level gets the diploma, it has fully reached the final level of the corresponding subjects in the first year of each university. When enrolling in many universities in the United States and Canada, if you have IB scores, you can generally transfer the corresponding credits directly.

IB is more complicated in course management. This is not a random test. Exams are just the last hurdle. Most programs require teachers to follow an IBO-approved syllabus. Students’ usual learning process and test scores will also be recorded in the total score of the IB course. The International Baccalaureate Organization has a lot of guidance and inspections for IB schools and IB students’ learning. Because the exam is aimed at a small number of people and is difficult, the brand of IB courses and exams has always been positioned at the high end. At present, there are not many schools offering IB courses in China, and there are not many students studying IB.

Wondering if your child is suitable for the IB program?

IB

Although the IB programme Singapore has many advantages, it does not mean that every child has this advantage. If you want to make the best choice, you must not only look at the syllabus, but also analyze the actual situation of your child, because the one that is suitable is the best.

  • From the syllabus to see what type of children IB is suitable for

As mentioned above, the difficulty and knowledge of the IB courses are relatively large, which requires certain requirements for children’s learning ability. Learning ability not only refers to the level of intelligence, but also includes a good learning attitude and learning methods. Children must have the desire and enthusiasm to learn knowledge, be willing to invest time, and know how to arrange study time reasonably in order to efficiently complete the learning tasks assigned by the teacher. Even if the child has not yet figured out the correct learning method, it is necessary to have a positive learning attitude. Otherwise, children will easily develop a rebellious psychology due to the high academic pressure, and in the end things will backfire.

Furthermore, the outstanding feature of the IB is that it combines art and science. Therefore, whether the child is biased is also a factor that must be considered. Moreover, the course assessment pays more attention to writing ability, so whether the child has a relatively good writing foundation, especially English writing ability, is also an aspect that parents must think about.

  • Consider from the training objectives of the IB curriculum

Getting an education is about making life better. We also hope that by receiving a good education, children will have more qualities and qualities that they currently do not have. Therefore, when judging whether a child is suitable for IB, you can also refer to the IB’s talent training goals, analyze whether these qualities are what you want your child to have in the future, and then make a choice. In other words, if the child has some of these qualities, then IB may be the best choice; if the child has the potential to possess these qualities, then choosing IB may be a good opportunity to cultivate the child comprehensively.

At the same time, the extended essay (EE), one of the core courses of the IB, requires students to choose their own topics and conduct independent research. Therefore, students not only need to have a macroscopic understanding of the knowledge in the curriculum system, but also need to think deeply, dig out their own interests, and find breakthroughs in order to find suitable topics for them. These are curriculum settings around the “explore” dimension. Therefore, whether the child has the ability to explore or the interest and thinking to explore is also a major breakthrough to help parents judge whether the child is suitable for the IB system.

  • From the perspective of future career planning, what kind of child is IB suitable for?

IB is more suitable for students who intend to engage in social work in the future. IB attaches great importance to the cultivation of international sentiment. The interdisciplinary competence, dissertation and community service required by the IB Diploma far exceed those required for the General Secondary School Diploma. In theory, it trains students to have a strong sense of social responsibility, a strong ability to analyze problems comprehensively, and strong writing and communication skills. Therefore, students are more suitable for social work in the future.

In fact, whether IB is suitable for children is not only judged by the standards of parents, but also must respect the wishes of children, because the happiness of children’s learning is the most important thing. At the same time, these “standards” only provide a reference dimension to reduce parents’ concerns about their children’s course selection due to ignorance. That doesn’t mean the child fits those dimensions. If you choose IB, you will definitely become the target of IB training talents. .
